City Guide: Portland

Published 07/26/2013 by

It’s a city in the Pacific Northwest known for its super laid back vibe, cool indie music scene and serious street food. Pack your bags, we’re off to Portland.

Rest & Relax

Part of an awesome getaway is staying at a cool hotel. Check yourself into the Ace Hotel. Located in downtown Portland and close to the Pearl District, an arts & culture hub with super cute clothing boutiques like the House of Lolo. The Ace sports a retro hipster vibe, think beds draped with Pendleton blankets and claw-foot bathtubs. Spotted in the lobby, a photo booth for snapshots – no Instagram required here. Grab your morning cup of joe at Stumptown Coffee Roasters located just off the lobby. And dine at next door at the communal tables of Clyde Common, a Euro-style tavern. Order the truffle popcorn will you – it’s great for sharing.

No Library Card Required

Powell’s City of Books is legendary in this city. Make sure to save a few hours to sift through the world’s largest independent new and used bookstore. The store can be a bit overwhelming at first (it’s huge), but not to worry, the rooms are themed and colour-coded to help you guide your way through.

Food Cart Heaven

So many food carts (about 500), so little time. A few notable carts – Big Ass Sandwiches, we were pretty much sold on the idea of having fries inside our sandwiches (why didn’t we think of that?). KOi Fusion, where Mexico and Korea meet in the form of kimchi tacos. And Nong Khao Man Gai, a cart that serves up the coziest Asian chicken and rice dish. Check out this list for the different areas where the food carts congregate.

Doughnuts are the New Black

Sugar highs are available at Voodoo Doughnuts 24 hours a day. You’ll find tasty and colourful doughnuts like bacon maple bar (complete with a strip of bacon on top), the loop (fruit loops that is) and Tangfastic (yup, Tang). Don’t forget the carton of milk to wash down all this goodness.

Did Someone Say  Patio?

Just spot the rustic log cabin in the middle of the city. You’ll find friendly bartenders, a spacious outdoor patio and a basement with live music at Doug Fir Lounge. Another noteworthy spot is the White Owl Social Club, where you’ll find a very cool crowd. They even have a membership club for frequent visitors. Still in the mood to explore? Head to The Alibi Tiki Lounge, a tiki lounge complete with karaoke. Who requested Britney Spears?
