If there is one beauty motto that best encapsulates 2014 its ‘go your own way’. From graffiti-scrawled lids and embellished brows to the simplicity of glowing skin and effortless hair and nails, the Spring 2014 runways proved the only beauty trend for 2014 is doing exactly what you please – and of course the free spirit in us- couldn’t be happier. Here are some of the most captivating beauty looks of the season to get gorgeous with (not that you aren’t already!).
One of the easiest ways to indulge in all this rebellious spirit on the spring 2014 runways is with barely-there makeup punctuated with a very (very!) bright lip. Orange lipstick reigned supreme, but there were also chemical peachs, Pepto pinks and acidic lilacs (timely, as Pantone just announced Radiant Orchid as their 2014 colour of the year).
From Hollywood’s leading ladies Michelle Williams and Jennifer Lawrence to music maven’s Miley Cyrus and Beyoncé, the latter half of 2013 was dominated by ‘the chop.’ This trend continues in 2014 (thanks to its appearance at Marc Jacobs), so opt for choppy layers and keep those roots extra dark.
The Z-Boys and their version of 1970s skate-punk served as inspiration for makeup legend, François Nars, adding: “I’m bored to death with the healthy look.” For him, spring 2014 is all about creating a character; with models sporting exaggerated blue-rimmed lids and tons of black mascara.
All That Glitters
Precious metal takes centre stage this spring with glittery lids, gilded lashes and graphic gold parts. But this isn’t a throwback to disco-era glitter, look for warm rose gold and deep browns to impart a sophisticated sunshine-y feel.
For all those not quite ready to chop off all their hair in the name of fashion, fret not because spring 2014 has you covered with hair jewels, braids and buns (or go one better and try a colourful braided bun!).
The proliferation of over-the-top nail art in recent seasons has given way to something a little softer this spring. If you aren’t quite ready for the return of clean, bare nails try a reverse French manicure (seen at Milly) or white nails with geometric lines (seen at Tibi).
Come As You Are
If there was one buzzword that dominated the no-makeup-makeup look this season it was “raw.” Makeup was applied and then wiped off, foundation was swapped for dewy tinted moisturizers or just concealer and hair was allowed to dry naturally and texturized using hands.
Natural, healthy ‘looking’ makeup is one thing, but the best base is glowing skin and healthy, strong hair. Beyoncé and Jay-Z flirted with veganism last year and every top model snapped selfies working out or drinking green juice. Annoying, yes… but proving that veganism, green juices and the like are no longer relegated to the extremes of healthy eating. So here’s to 2014 and feeling beautiful from the inside, out.
