DIY Beauty from your Kitchen

Published 03/12/2014 by

Have you ever heard anyone order a Butylparaben cocktail? Or a piece of Polyethylene glycol pie? What about a Triethanolaminesalad? Or a Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Smoothie? Our guess is most definitely not, and ew. You go it, these ingredients don’t fit anywhere near plates, cocktail glasses or our mouths, but we slather our faces with them everyday. Yes, you do. We all do. They are the scary chemicals most commonly found in beauty products, and they’re not fun. Especially when you’ve just spent top dollars on a blush that is stocked full of talc, a.k.a. toluene, a.k.apretty bad stuff.

Trust us, the real DIY beauty deal is already in your kitchen, it will save you tons of cash and can be munched on if you’re ever stuck on a deserted island or more likely in a subway car or taxi cab. Besides, lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg, honey and turmeric sounds way nicer than 1,4-dioxane, doesn’t it?

These 5 Natural Beauty Cures will heal you and your wallet:

The Cure: Lemons and Water

The Trick:Lemon Acne Spot Cure

The Tools: Small Container, Q-Tip, Refrigerator

  • Squeeze 1 full lemon into a measuring cup (remove seeds)
  • Add 1 tablespoon of water
  • Mix thoroughly
  • Pour into small container

A.M pre make-up or P.M pre bedtime, dip the Q-Tip into the solution and gently graze over spot, blemish or pimple. Don’t layer any other make-up or cream on top. Let the lemons do their thing.

The Deal:Lemon juice contains citric acid, which is anti-bacterial, and a natural anti-oxidant. Lemons can help to remove toxins from the body, reduce redness in skin and brighten the complexion.

The Cost: .99$ a lemon, the water is free

FYI on the DIY: Keep it in the refrigerator for best results. It might tingle or burn a little when you first apply it, don’t worry. It’s normal.

The Cure: Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Sugar, Cocoa

The Trick:Pure Glowing Blush

The Tools:A small shallow container with twist top, a spice grinder (if you have one, if not then use pre-ground spices).

  • 1 part Cinnamon (1/4 cup)
  • 1 part nutmeg (1/4 cup)
  • 1 tablespoon of Cocoa powder
  • A dash of brown sugar (not too much!)

Mix all the powders together in a measuring cup. Pour into the container. Shake before each usage.

The Deal:You will love, love, love the result of this DIY blush bronzer. It will give you Oscar worthy glamour skin and the soft natural scent of the spices blended together will last all day. Cinnamon, nutmeg and cocoa are power spices. Known as brain boosters, the soft scent of this triad can help relieve stress and fatigue. When applied to the skin cinnamon and nutmeg can fight inflammation. Warning: You may crave cookies, baked goods and sugary cakes more than usual.

The Cost:All of these spices can be bought at a bulk store, which is way cheaper than prepackaged goods. Under $5.00

FYI on the DIY: It’s best to use a BIG blush brush to blend on your skin. A smaller brush will leave you with David Bowie 80’s blush streaks, which nobody wants. This is a powerful little potion, very little goes a long way. Tap a small amount into the container cover and blend in before applying to your face.

  • Pure Honey (1/8 cup)
