While the Dominican has a long standing reputation as a go to spot for all-inclusive resorts right on the beach, open bars and buffet tables as far as the eye can see, it turns out that there is so much more to this truly beautiful country.
If you make your way over to Barahona, or La Riviera Dominicana, you will find yourself pretty darn near paradise, and a new hot bed for eco-resorts that offer up a completely different vacation experience.
For the Mowgli in you, Rancho Platon sits smack dab in the middle of a tropical forest where you can sleep up in the trees or right under a waterfall. A family project, owner Manuel Toral Compiz’s grandfather used to run the land as a coffee plantation, and now it’s a literal fun house with tubing, water slides, horseback riding into the mountains, day trips to the breathtaking Eagle’s Bay, hiking, zip lining and more.
Staying true to their eco promise, all of the electricity is generated on site, with no waste or chemicals and all of the surrounding water has been left to its natural flow.
Just down the road is the incomparable Casa Bonita, where chef Galmy Guevara, goes to her organic garden every day to pick fresh produce she uses in her meals at the estate’s restaurant. She was only 16 when she started in the kitchen, working alongside her mother who was the chef when it was a privately owned home. Now it’s a boutique 13-room resort with the an on-site spa (you’ll never be able to beat the experience of getting massaged in a canopy in the middle of the jungle, trust me), zip lining course and a pizza oven where chef Guevara send them hot out of the oven when you are done with your morning activities.
More than a vacation, this is a straight up adventure.
