Girl Crush: 10 Women To Watch

Published 07/09/2014 by

Welcome to our unofficial ‘girls of summer’ list! From bloggers-turned-actresses to musicians and models, we think these ladies are killin’ it right now (because they are), so be sure to keep them on your radar well past summer vacation.

1/ Tavi Gevinson

Teen wunderkind Tavi Gevinson seems to always be on our “one’s to watch” lists, mostly because she just can’t stop adding to her already impressive resume. Blogger, editor-in-chief and activist, Tavi can now add Broadway actress to her long list of accomplishments. Starring in This is Our Youth alongside Michael Cera and Kieran Culkin, the 1996 cult play set in 1980s Manhattan opens on Broadway August 18th.

2/ Iggy Azalea

Welcome to the summer of Iggy. Can’t get “Fancy” out of your head? Us neither. But we’re cool with that because it just so happens that the rest of the world is singing alongside us. Iggy made history this month as the longest-leading female rapper with a No. 1 hit on the Top Billboard 100 list. Six weeks at the top and there’s no stopping her—just keep watching.

3/ Jenny Slate

A now infamous SNL sketch (that got her fired). Marcel the Shell. Parks and Recreation. These are just some of the ways you may already be familiar with comedian Jenny Slate. If not, let me introduce you to her here—but this time as a bonafide star. Her much-anticipated feature length movie Obvious Child (out in theatres now) is guaranteed to be the most honest and sincere movie you’ll see this summer.

4/ FKA Twigs

In the age of visual pop (Beyoncé, Lana Del Rey, Lady Gaga) newcomer FKA Twigs is quickly carving out an incredible niche for herself. Known for her CGI-like-effects in which she manipulates parts of her body, her videos have mesmerized audiences worldwide. Releasing “Two Weeks” earlier this summer, the video pays homage to Aaliyah’s 2002 film Queen of the Damned. With her debut album LP1 dropping this August, we can’t wait to see what this young Brit has in store for us.

5/ Ali Michael

Texan-born, NYC-based model Ali Michael first rose to fame speaking out against body image issues in the modeling industry back in 2007 by appearing on the Today Show and penning articles for Teen Vogue. This past month marks her return to the fashion industry starring in the new ck one campaign shot by Mario Sorrenti. Otherwise, follow her on Instagram for the best selfies around.

6/ Angel Haze

When writer, poet and rapper Angel Haze recently opened for MIA in Los Angeles she jumped into the crowd during her set, performing alongside the crowd awash in a sea of cell phone and camera flashes. But that’s not surprising from an artist who leaked her own album last winter after a dispute with her record label—she clearly does things her own way. Touring with Bastille this summer, you can also hear the Detroit-based musician singing the theme song for 22 Jump Street.

7/ Kiesza

Meet the artist behind this summer’s surprise hit: “Hideaway” by Canadian songstress Kiesza. Released back in February, the video now has more than 40 million views and went No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart in April. She went on to perform at the Much Music Video Awards earlier this summer and is currently touring. With her “Hideaway” EP now available, new song and video out and an album on the way, Kiesza is just getting started.

9/ Laila Gohar

Last year Cairo-born, New York-based Laila Gohar found herself throwing small, intimate dinners for a few friends. It quickly evolved into dinner parties for 30-something NYC denizens who crammed themselves into tiny apartments, lofts or rooftop gardens in Brooklyn. This year, Laila debuted Sunday Suppers, aimed at supporting and fostering local community with her DIY approach to cooking and sets up shop wherever she’s invited.

10/ Marz Leon

Marz Leon is a newcomer, like so new that she just released her first single “Loner” on July 1st. But her soulful voice and candid lyrics have already garnered her many adoring fans. Speaking about her first single recently the L.A-native said, “[it] displays how you can go anywhere alone and still enjoy your time without depending on someone else to make that time more interesting. Self-realization and alone time is the best times of our lives.” Best advice you’ll get this summer.
