The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Flawless Skin

Published 10/01/2014 by

Chalk it up to the seasons changing and our hard-earned tans fading but on the first day of fall we noticed our complexions looking a little, well… dull. But since it’s always a good idea to adjust your skincare routine as temperatures drop, there’s no time like the present for a much-needed overhaul. From years of practice, the one thing we’ve learned is that half the battle to getting beautiful, glowing skin is prep work. The more work you put in now equals less makeup in the long run—so here’s to getting serious about getting rid of those pesky dark spots and uneven skin tone to keep us looking #flawless [insert obligatory Beyoncé reference here].

This is your every day arsenal against dull and dry skin. You’ve heard it once and you’re about to hear it again, but you must, we repeat, MUST take off your makeup before bed if you want glowing skin the next morning. We promise this is the most work we’re going to ask you to do. Dermalogica’s  Precleanse comes recommended by one of our fave makeup artist and Youtube stars @MakeupbyEman who uses it to take off layers of editorial makeup after a long day.

To tone or not to tone? That is the question. (OK, not the question, but still a good one where skincare is concerned). To be honest, this step is completely up to you and more a matter of preference. Instead of buying a toner that just sits in your drawer for a year try mixing one part Apple Cider Vinegar with two parts water. Using a cotton pad to apply, this will help balance out the PH levels of your skin and is great for fading acne scars and dark spots.

About once a week take the time for a deep exfoliation with either a skin brush and some cleanser (this one offers the best value and works like a charm) or a salty scrub. This will ensure smooth skin texture, which in the world of flawless skin is right up there with concealer (more on that later).

Healthy, glowing skin must look natural (well, as natural as we can fake it). This means swapping your foundation for a tinted moisturizer or CC Cream. Our favourites are from Laura Mercier and Bourjois. Both will impart a subtle dewy glow and will actually help even out skin tone and texture in the long run.

Finish off your routine with a great concealer, this will hide any acne spots, dark circles under the eyes and redness around the nose. Top concealer picks are Stila CC Color Correcting Stick and Bare Escentuals Correcting Concealer. Again, you want to look for products that will brighten and reduce dark circles over time. Because both products are super pigmented, a little goes a long way so just dot gently with fingers where you need it—perfect for looking naturally flawless. Highlighter is also your secret weapon for glowing, lit from within skin. The key is choosing one that matches your skin tone. Try Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfector to impart a natural, healthy glow.
