But First, Let Me Take A #Selfie

Published 04/24/2015 by

Whether or not you want to admit it, Kim Kardashian knows what she’s doing when it comes to taking the perfect selfie. Her advice: Pose with a mirror, keep your chin down and take 300 photos. What can we say, the girl is dedicated. But so are we! With prom season now in full effect, knowing how to take the perfect selfie is very necessary. So what exactly does it take to frame the perfect shot? Well, we did our research and here’s what we found.

1. Know Your Angles

First thing first, experimenting in front of a mirror to know which angles best suit your face and bone structure is a crucial element to the art of selfie taking. The majority of people look their best with their face tilted slightly to the side and, the camera held at a 45 degree angle above eye level (no shadows or double chins!).

2. Let there be light

Lighting is your BFF! The right lighting can instantly hide any blemishes by making your skin look ***flawless while simultaneously highlighting your best features. For the best results, try facing the light directly and standing next to a window or going outside to take advantage of the natural light.

3. Consider your background

This can be as simple as a clean monochrome wall, a beautiful garden or better yet, a background overlooking the sunset for a romantic feel. Just make sure you avoid busy backgrounds or worst, the awkward backdrop of strangers giving you the stink eye.

4. Avoid Clichés

Take it as a rule of thumb to always avoid the duck face. Trust us.

5. Strike a Pose

Practice makes perfect and the perfect selfie is all about trial and error. Plus, not everyone knows what angles work best for them. Taking multiple selfies at different angles in different poses is a good way to play around and figure out what works best for you.

6. Use the Right Apps and Filters

Making use of Instagram filters and apps – all in moderation – will bring your selfie game to the next level. Our personal favourite apps include Perfect365, Snapseed, and VSCOcam.

7. Just be you!

At the end of the day, it’s prom night and you’re here to have fun and to capture genuine moments. So relax and don’t take yourself too seriously! Good vibes are contagious so don’t overthink it.
